Michael Steele is the new RNC Chairman........

The Republican Party chose the first black national chairman in its history Friday.

Steele won in the sixth ballot, with 91 votes out of a possible 168.

He is viewed as the most moderate of the five candidates who stood for the position.

In his brief acceptance speech, the former lieutenant governor of the US state of Maryland said he was determined to revitalise the party.

"We're going to bring this party to every corner, every board room, every neighborhood, every community," he said.

"And we're going to say to friend and foe alike, we want you to be a part of us, we want you to work with us.

After a humiliating defeat last fall in which they lost both the White House and Congress, it was about time in my opinion, they started opening up the party to more minorities.

Steele is a good man, and the RNC made a good choice tonight.
